8. Contis lighthouse

A place steeped in history

The Contis lighthouse is one of the few lighthouses still in operation along the Aquitaine coast, a true testament to the region's maritime history. Built in the 19th century, this lighthouse has guided many ships through the sometimes turbulent waters of the Atlantic. Its tower, painted black and white, stands proudly amid sand dunes and a pine forest, providing a striking contrast with the deep blue of the ocean.

From here, the view of the ocean is splendid, stretching as far as the eye can see across the horizon. To see the sunrise AND the sunset

If you didn't already know, the Landes also has a wealth of viewpoints from high up. The belvederes, some of which are accessible right in the heart of the Landes forest, are also great places to admire sunrises and sunsets in the company of pine trees. In the plant world, the Landes pine - or maritime pine - is a species of conifer that is representative of the biodiversity of this département in south-west France. With its temperate summers and mild winters, the Landes is an ideal land for these trees and the local gemmage culture that stems from them. When you come to the Landes de Gascogne forest, it's not just a visit to the forest that you'll experience. You'll be able to contemplate the entire history of this land of a thousand colours.

Our riddle to you: can you find the lost pine tree with the wild look that was last seen bushy at the top of the absolute dune?
