EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE COURSE LANDAISE
The Course Landaise is one of the four bullfights practised in the world, a tradition that dates back to the 15th century in the south-west of France. Unlike Spanish bullfighting, there is no killing of the animal. Here, it's the love of cows that counts! Here's what you need to know about the "toreros", "écarteurs" and "sauteurs" who put on the show in the arena!
THE RACING COW, THE REAL STAR OF THE RING
Landes cows are true racehorses, bred by ganaderias (bullfighting farms). Selected for their bravery and nobility, Landes cows enter the arena at around 3 years of age and remain in the ring for around ten years. Every year, the Corne d'Or trophy is awarded to the best runner of the temporada (bullfighting season).
THE RIDER
The man who defies the cow! You can recognise him by his white trousers and shimmering bolero embellished with gold or silver sequins. He stands in the middle of the arena and calls the cow. When the animal is launched into a gallop, the spreader has to 'swerve' at the last moment to dodge the charge. The coursayre (bullfighter) turns on himself to let the cow pass through the hollow of his loins.
THE JUMPER
The jumper is, along with the spreader, one of the two bullfighters in the Landes race. A good jumper is above all an accomplished gymnast. His job? Avoid the cow by jumping over it! There are different types of jump: running jump, angel jump, somersault, twisted somersault, etc. The most spectacular acrobatic figure is the "feet in the beret" jump. The bullfighter has to jump with his feet together, without a run-up, 1.50 metres above the bullfighter's horns!
THE MEN IN WHITE
The "men in white" are essential to the smooth running of the Landes race. Starting with the trainer, who places the cow and directs it to the centre of the ring where the spreader or jumper stands. The cordier (or rope keeper) guides the cow using the rope tied around the horns. He must also hold back the steed if the bullfighter falls to the ground. Finally, the "second" is responsible for attracting the cow by waving his handkerchief when the bullfighter has made his swerve, so that the animal does not turn on the spreader.
